Mac VPN setup for macOS

Secure your MacBook or iMac in minutes with a VPN app, the native macOS VPN, or the WireGuard client pointed at your own private server.

macOS makes VPNs simple. A provider's app installs in a couple of clicks and adds a menu-bar toggle; the built-in client works for manual or corporate VPNs; and the WireGuard app connects to a server you own. Either way you get encrypted traffic and a private IP.

Using a VPN app on Mac

Download your provider's macOS app, sign in, and connect from the menu bar. Enable launch-at-login and the kill switch for always-on protection.

Native macOS VPN

Open System Settings > Network > Add VPN configuration, choose the type (IKEv2, L2TP), and enter the server and account details from your provider.

Connecting to your own WireGuard server

Install the WireGuard app from the Mac App Store, import the config from your own server, and toggle it on from the menu bar. Your Mac now routes through a dedicated IP that's yours alone.

Mac VPN FAQ

Does macOS include a VPN?

It has a built-in VPN client for manual configs, but not a VPN service β€” you still need a provider or your own server.

What's the easiest way to set up a VPN on Mac?

Install the provider's macOS app β€” it configures everything and adds a menu-bar switch.

Can I connect my Mac to my own server?

Yes β€” the WireGuard app imports your server config and connects to a private IP you control.
